Zuma Tomes Woosley and Charles Ray Woosley
Mrs. Zuma Tomes Woosley was born April 2, 1914, to Butler Tomes and Mittie Raymer Tomes. An Edmonson County native, Zuma led a prolific life and was very involved in her community, serving as a former owner of Ray’s Drive-In, a former school teacher in Big Reedy, a member and former president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, a member of both the Hilltopper Athletic Foundation, and a member of Lehman Avenue Church of Christ. Zuma was married to Raymond Woosley until his passing in 1982; they had three sons: Charles, Raymond, and Barry, all of whom are graduates of Western Kentucky University. She passed away on August 5, 1993.
Charles Ray Woosley was also an Edmonson County, Kentucky native, and was the eldest son of Raymond Woosley and Zuma Tomes Woosley. He graduated from Bowling Green Business University (now part of WKU) in 1956. As a student, he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and the Barons.
Like his mother, Charles was also a very involved member of the community: working as a caterer, owning and operating Ray’s Catering, serving as a former Bowling Green City Commissioner, past president of Kentucky Restaurant Association, former member of the Bowling Green Rotary Club, member of Eastwood Baptist Church, Hilltopper Athletic Association, Elk’s Lodge, and Bowling Green – Warren County Jaycees. He was married to Mrs. Judith Woosley and they had three sons. Charles passed away on November 13, 1996 at the age of 62.
The Zuma Tomes Woosley Scholarship Fund was established in the College Heights Foundation to honor the life and legacy of Mrs. Zuma Woosley, loyal Hilltopper and devoted member of society she was. Upon Charles’ passing, to also honor his legacy, the fund was changed to the Zuma Tomes Woosley and Charles Ray Woosley Scholarship Fund. Now through this fund, both Zuma and Charles’ legacies live on, continuing to give back to their community and keeping their Hilltopper Spirit alive.
