Norman G. Collier
Dr. Norman Glyn Collier was born in Taylorsville, Kentucky, the only child of Hazel Rogers Collier and Norman Smith Collier. Dr. Collier graduated from WKU in 1962, where he majored in Chemistry. From WKU, Dr. Collier went on to attend the University of Louisville School of Medicine and then the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, for his ophthalmology residency. He then joined the University of Louisville Department of Ophthalmology as an assistant professor. He later went on to become a successful ophthalmologist in Louisville. He was in the private practice of ophthalmology for 30 years in Louisville until his retirement in April of 2002.
Dr. Collier also led a prolific life outside of his academic and work career. He served as a battalion surgeon in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for duty in the field against an armed, hostile force. He was also a member of the Jefferson County Medical Society, American Medical Association, Louisville Eye Physicians Society, and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Harmony Landing Country Club, and Highland Presbyterian Church, as well as a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Collier was married to Ellen Dornheim Collier, and they had three children: Paige, Christopher, and Charles.
In December 2002, Dr. Collier passed away at the age of 62. To honor his memory and Hilltopper spirit, his wife Ellen established the Norman G. Collier Scholarship Fund. Through this fund, his legacy lives on as deserving Pre-Med students are provided assistance and encouragement.
