Jennie Stonecipher Ewald

Jennie Stonecipher Ewald was born in Lake City, Tennessee, to Jennie Mae Settles Stonecipher and Harry Sheldon Stonecipher. She is the youngest of their five children following Harry, Ron, Joe, and Janet. Jennie attended school in Oneida, Tennessee, and graduated from Shenandoah High School in Middletown, Indiana in 1972. After high school, Jennie studied fashion design in Atlanta, Georgia, and later worked in the finance business in Indiana and Tennessee. She then attended East Tennessee State University earning a BA in Psychology in 1981. On June 19, 1982, she married Richard Ewald in Kingsport, Tennessee. In 1983 she graduated from University of Cincinnati with a Master in Education in School Psychology. She then practiced school psychology in Ohio and Kentucky. Jennie was president of the Kentucky Association of Psychologists in the Schools, and earned the Best Practices Award from that organization.

Although Jennie’s academic and professional accomplishments are impressive, family and friends say they still do not adequately describe nor define her. Jennie’s students, friends, and family knew her as a source of calm and reliable wisdom. She was always willing to help others search for solutions within themselves and was fiercely loyal to all who confided in her. Jennie also had many hobbies, seamstressing, cross-stitching, golfing, reading, and was beginning to take up writing shortly before her death. Most of all, she loved being surrounded by her family and friends. All who knew her will forever remember her big smile and even bigger heart.

Nearly 12 years after being diagnosed with breast cancer, Jennie passed away at her home in Russellville, Kentucky. To honor her memory, the Jennie Stonecipher Ewald Scholarship Fund was established in September of 2004 by her husband, Richard. The fund helps deserving students at WKU majoring within the School of Teacher Education or the Department of Communication Disorders with the intention of working in an elementary or secondary school after graduation. Jennie devoted her professional life to education and helping children, and through this fund, that legacy lives on.
