Janice Insko Porter

Janice “Jan” A. Insko Porter was born January 7, 1932 in Buechel, Kentucky. She attended and graduated WKU, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics and met her husband, Don. They met in 1950 while working in the campus cafeteria. After two years of dating, Don left for a two year tour of duty in Germany. Concerned that Jan might not wait for him to return, Don asked for her hand in marriage over a phone call made from Germany. When Don returned from service, both he and Jan returned to WKU to finish their degrees. They both graduated in 1955, and were married in Louisville, Kentucky in December of 1955. She worked as a home economics assistant teacher for the Jefferson County Board of Education following the completion of her education. Don and Jan had one son and were married 48 years before her passing in 2003.

To honor Jan’s memory, Don established the Janice Insko Scholarship Fund in 2007. The fund assists WKU students majoring in family and consumer sciences. Through this fund, Jan’s legacy lives on in perpetuity.
