James Hines

Mr. James “Jimmy” Griffith Hines was born April 23, 1925 to James Richard Hines and Clarice Griffith Crow of Morgantown, Kentucky. He was a WWII veteran of the United States Army, a member and deacon of The Presbyterian Church, a member of the Bowling Green Masonic Lodge 73 F&AM, the Bowling Green Noon Lions Club, the Board of Trustees of the Ogden Foundation, the Petroleum Club of Louisville, Kentucky, the Propeller Club, and a member of the American Waterways Operators. He was a proud supporter of Western Kentucky University basketball and a season ticket holder for 65 years.

Jimmy Hines was the founder and president of Hines, Inc. and at his death he was serving as a member of the Board of Directors of Hines Furlong Line. Mr. Hines represented the 4th generation of his family in the river transportation business. He also served as director and director emeritus of American National Bank. In addition to his prolific career, Jimmy was also a generous supporter of WKU and was a member of the Cupola Society and President’s Circle.

Jimmy was married to his wife, Mae Etta Cohron Hines, for sixty four years before his death on September 8, 2013. Jimmy and Mae Etta had one daughter, Mrs. Donna Hines Furlong, a WKU 1973 alumna.

To honor the memory of her father, Donna Furlong established the James Hines Memorial Fund for Lady Topper Basketball. Mr. Hines was an avid supporter of Western Kentucky University, particularly the Women’s Basketball Team, and this scholarship serves to benefit a group he was so passionate about. Through this fund, Jimmy Hines’ Hilltopper legacy lives on in perpetuity.
