Hines Family

This award is made possible through a perpetual trust established within the College Heights Foundation by members of the Hines family who are direct descendants of John Porter Hines and Margaret Nicholls Hines. In July, 1988, this fund was established by Mrs. Jane Morningstar, Mrs. Caroline Tyson, Mr. Kenneth B. Hines, Sr., Mrs. Cora Jane Spiller, Mr. Hugh Gates Hines and Mrs. John P. Hines. The individuals listed above contributed $1,000 each. This award was first made for the 1980-1990 school year. Descendants of the Hines family are to get first preference for this award.

In addition, Mrs. Morningstar asked that the funds from an account established in memory of her parents be transferred to this fund.

Ms. Jane Morningstar graduated from Bowling Green Business University in 1923 with a Bachelor Degree.

Mrs. Caroline Hines Tyson was born July 7, 1915. She graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1936 with a Bachelor of Science in English, and a French minor. She worked in the Psychology Department at the University of Oregon, and as a Minister at Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church. She was the first woman to address the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon from the pulpit at the Diocesan Convention in Salem. She is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Roseburg, the Douglas County Museum board and Elkton Chapter of the Eastern Star. She has two children, Ty and Stephen.

Mr. Kenneth B. Hines, Sr. was born September 1, 1934. He graduated from Bowling Green Business University in 1956. While at WKU, he participated in Barons Fraternity. He is a retired Accountant Executive at Burns Harrelson Burns, and a board member at the Salvation Army. Kenneth was inducted into Bowling Green High Hall of Honor in 2008. He and his wife, Barbara, have two children, Kenneth Jr. and Laura.

Mrs. Cora Jane Spiller was born May 9, 1928. She graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. Cora was a member of the College Heights Herald staff, and Symphony Orchestra. She has been a member of Clinical Education Complex Charter Committee, HODA Screening Committee, Vice-President of Friends of Women’s Studies Group, and is currently a member of College High Grand Gathering Team. She is a patron supporter of the BG-WC Community Foundation. She and her husband, Col. Robert, have four children, Helen, Cora, Robert, and Nancy.

Mr. Hugh Gates Hines was born July 1, 1937. He was previously an agent at Northwestern Mutual Life, but is currently the owner of Hugh Hines, and works with Northwestern Mutual Life foundation.

Mrs. John P. Hines graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1948, and was a member of Phi Mu.
