George C. Moore

Dr. George C. Moore grew up at 1424 Adams Street in Bowling Green, Kentucky, just down the street from WKU in the “Shadow of the Hill,” as he and others called it. As a young man, Dr. Moore became interested in “Amateur Radio” and was certified after high school graduation. Upon graduation, he joined the Navy and was trained as an electronics engineer. Dr. Moore then served six years in the Navy. After serving, Dr. Moore returned to the Hill and received his bachelor’s degree at WKU. He then pursued and attained his master’s degree and his doctorate degree at Northwestern University in Illinois.

After Dr. Moore obtained his degrees, he returned to WKU and became an integral member of the Hilltopper family for 21 years. Dr. Moore was instrumental in selecting and having installed the initial “large box” computer system in the administrative building. During his time at WKU, he worked with both the Computer Center and the Physics and Astronomy Department. Dr. Moore became known to many as a generous, gifted Physics and Computer Science professor who sincerely believed in education and, because of that belief, gave unselfishly of his time, energy, and talents in support of programs and activities that helped students and benefited WKU.

After a prolific career Dr. Moore passed away in February,1985. To honor his legacy, the George C. Moore Physics Scholarship Fund was established by friends, colleagues, and former students. Through this scholarship, WKU students who are pursuing a degree in Physics are helped in obtaining an education and the memory of Dr. Moore lives on in perpetuity.
