Dr. Norman A. Deeb Kappa Alpha

Dr. Norman A. Deeb was born December 16, 1922, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Isaac Abraham Deeb and Anna Thomas Deeb. Norman graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1940, then attended Eastern Kentucky University to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in science. He also graduated from Xavier University in 1960, with a Master of Education degree and from the University of Kentucky in 1965, with a Doctorate of Education.

Norman served in the Army during World War II with the 182 Engineer Combat Battalion, with his career ending as a first lieutenant. After his career in the Army, he returned to Kentucky, where he became a teacher and football coach at Shelbyville High School, Bellevue High School, Xavier University, Eastern Kentucky University, and the University of Kentucky under Coach Blanton Collier.

He also worked at WKU teaching graduate courses on the history of educational psychology. While on the Hill, Norman was instrumental in the creation of Kappa Alpha Order at WKU in 1979. He was Kappa Alpha’s first honorary initiate, faculty adviser, and alumni adviser until 1985. He was awarded the highest honor when he was appointed to the Kappa Alpha Court of Honor.

After his retirement from the graduate staff, he published a book on educational philosophy entitled “Cloud Nine.” Norman was married to Rosemary Deeb for 52 years, until his passing on April 8, 2007. Norman and Rosemary had two sons, John Greary Deeb Sr., and Mark Thomas Deeb.

To honor his legacy at WKU, the Barren River Area Alumni Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Order established the Dr. Norman A. Deeb Kappa Alpha Scholarship Fund. The fund assists deserving WKU students who are members of the Kappa Alpha Order and have a 2.5 or above GPA. Through this fund, Norman’s memory lives on in perpetuity.
