Dr. John S. Spraker
Dr. John S. Spraker earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and computer science from Middle Tennessee State University in 1982. He continued his graduate studies at Indiana University Bloomington, earning a Master of Arts degree in 1984 and a PhD in 1987 under the direction of noted mathematician John Conway. His doctoral research focused on function-theoretic operator theory, culminating in his dissertation, “The Minimal Normal Extension for Mz on the Hardy Space of a Planar Region.”
Dr. Spraker joined the Department of Mathematics at Western Kentucky University in 1987 and devoted 34 years to teaching, mentoring, and scholarship on the Hill. Over the course of his distinguished career, he taught a broad range of undergraduate and graduate mathematics courses, from college algebra and calculus to real and complex analysis, differential equations, numerical analysis, and statistics. He became a full professor in 1997 and retired in 2021 as an Emeritus Professor of Mathematics.
A dedicated scholar, Dr. Spraker authored and coauthored numerous research publications in areas including differential equations, operator theory, functional analysis, and mathematics education. His work appeared in respected journals such as the Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, the Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society, and the Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications. He also delivered professional presentations at meetings of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Kentucky Academy of Science.
Throughout his career, Dr. Spraker remained deeply committed to student success and service to the university community. He directed graduate and undergraduate research projects, advised students preparing for actuarial examinations, served as faculty advisor for Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society, and participated in numerous university and departmental committees. Reflecting on his years at WKU, Dr. Spraker considers one of the greatest rewards of his career to be watching his students succeed academically and professionally. He established the Dr. John Spraker Scholarship Fund in 2026. The fund assists deserving, full-time graduate or undergraduate mathematics or mathematics education at WKU. Through this fund, John’s legacy on the Hill lives on in perpetuity.
