Carter- Katayama

John M. Carter had distinguished careers as a serviceman and U.S. letter carrier. A Louisville, Kentucky, native, John was known as a kind and generous man. He was the father of Darla M. Carter, a 1991 graduate of WKU. He passed away on November 14, 1996, at the age of 53.

Danny A. Katayama was born January 18, 1963. Although Danny was not a graduate of WKU, he worked with his fiancé, Darla, for two summers as a volunteer writing coach for the Minority Journalism Workshop sponsored by WKU. He had a tremendous respect for WKU’s efforts to stimulate high school students’ interest in journalism. Following a sudden heart attack, he passed away on May 11, 1997.

To honor the memories of her father and fiancé, Darla established the Carter-Katayama Minority Journalism Workshop Scholarship Fund in 1997. The fund assists WKU students majoring within the Department of Journalism who have attended the Minority Journalism Workshop, with preference given to those majoring in journalism. Through this fund, John and Danny’s legacies live on in perpetuity.
